Recognising that the majority of collisions are caused by driver error, the IAMs Advanced Driving Test was introduced in 1956 with the specific objective of significantly improving driving standards using the principles of advanced driving pioneered and applied with unparalleled success by the Metropolitan Police since the 1930s.

Over 400,000 drivers have taken the Advanced Driving Test.  The pass rate with Bristol Advanced Motorists during 2012 was  98% and the IAM currently has over 100,000 active members.

The IAM Advanced Driving Test is accredited by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).
