This page appears in this non members area of this website to show members of the public the additional Advanced Driver training facilities available to Members of the IAM Bristol Group.
Being an IAM Observer is a truly satisfying albeit voluntary occupation and the QO Course is designed to provide an opportunity to those members who wish to give something back by becoming a Qualified Observer with the Group. Test pass candidates are presented with a Qualified Observer Certificate.
It is expected that QO candidates will normally have completed the FAD Course and Test so will already have demonstrated a high level of Roadcraft knowledge and driving competence.
The two main differences between FAD and QO are that;
1. QO requires the candidate additionally to demonstrate an aptitude to pass on their knowledge and abilities to others who also wish to become advanced drivers and
2. there is a further question paper on Group and IAM administration.
Commentary is not only mandatory but it has to be delivered in a two way fashion which involves and invites the recipient i.e., “…now we’re approaching a left hand bend at 60mph but watch how I invoke the system of car control by first checking my mirrors before taking a position just to the left of the centre white line...” etc.
Bristol Advanced Motorists has one of the largest Observer teams in the region but we’re always pleased to welcome new members into it so we’d like to hear from you.
